Kaonashi, Krypt & Mouthbreather – Grantski Records – Augusta, GA(Show Review)

This show was not what I expected in the slightest. For very good reasons and also a few negative ones as well. Each group brought something different to the table.
Hardcore and blackened thrash metal go surprisingly well together.
But it also can lead to some frantic, non-cohesive energy as it did here. That’s no offense to Mouthbreather, Krypt, or Kaonashi. They were badass!

Heavy Metal Therapy: Die, Cry, Hate

The very essence of metal as a genre of music is to be rebellious against the normal standards of society and against authority. Of course, this is common knowledge for any metalhead. But why do we feel this way?
Because a lot of us have been hurt in the past just for being ourselves. The idea that a person would abuse another emotionally or physically for no other reason than to validate themselves is just revolting. But for many people, they know it all too well.

The ‘TikTokification’ of Heavy Metal

It’s no secret that TikTok has become a new horizon, or detriment, to our society and culture. That includes music and the music industry as a whole.

There are so many ways in which I could explain how a platform like TikTok has made music more accessible than ever. But there are even more ways I could describe how it has made that music cheap and easy.

So how does this apply to a genre like heavy metal you ask?

Band Spotlight: Malevolence

This British metal outfit has the ‘it’ factor. And when I say ‘it’ factor, I mean ‘it’ 1000 times over! Frankly, every metal band that exists right now needs to take some notes from Malevolence on creating an identity and sound that propels them to rapid success.

Their single “On Broken Glass” is their biggest hit to date and put everyone on notice, including me. It was the song that gave way to such rapid success. But it’s a combination of things past this fact that have given way to the love they deserve.

It’s the vocal dynamics between Alex Taylor and Konan Hall. It’s the range of music they can create. It’s the appeal to the diehard and casual metal fan that flows seamlessly through the songs they make. It’s the fact that they have such natural charisma, even without a distinct look from other bands.

I’m not afraid to admit that Malevolence may be one of the best bands in the scene right now.

Some Metal Fans Need A New Mindset

The heavy metal community is filled with some that act superior because they believe that the music has more intricacies than other genres. This is why much of the genre sees no growth and development from a commercial and popularity standpoint. That’s not to say that heavy metal isn’t more prominent than it might have been before given the impact platforms such as TikTok have had on the entire world of music. But it’s still not on par with other genres.

Sure, there are bands out there doing the genre justice, creating engag

Band Spotlight: Not Enough Space

There is really not enough space in this post to describe how awesome Not Enough Space is as a metalcore act that has blown up in popularity ever since their track “No Way Out” dropped at the end of March this year.
A six-piece band that has me salivating for a 2000s metalcore revival, Not Enough Space is poised for success as long as they continue to use that old-school sound to their advantage.
Consisting of two fantastic vocalists in Olivia Marie @metalcoreliv and Lizzie Kristina @lizzie.christina, they are able to blend cleans and screams seamlessly in a style of metalcore that should be dead in 2023.

Crypta – Shades of Sorrow(2023) – Album Review

In my recent post, “Metal is in a Great Spot Right Now”, I said that Crypta was releasing some of the best death metal singles of the past five years in “Lord of Ruins”, “Trial of Traitors”, and “The Other Side of Anger”. I absolutely believe that to be true.
Consisting of Fernanda Lira on vocals and bass, Luana Dametto on drums, Tainá Bergamaschi on lead guitar, and newcomer Jéssica di Falchi also on lead guitar, this group has quickly risen to prominence with their new release “Shades of Sorrow”.

LET THEM FIGHT: IN GLOOM, REGIONS & TEAM DEATHMATCH – AUGUSTA, GA(SHOW REVIEW)

What can I say? This is the first metal show I’ve ever been to. And it did not disappoint!
Deathcore, metalcore, and hardcore. Anything core in heavy music just gets my blood flowing. Considering how much I listen to it, you’d think it’d become stale at some point. Well, it hasn’t become that way for me. Hell no!
In Gloom, Regions, and Team Deathmatch all presented the reasons why it hasn’t gone out of style for my ears.
To begin, the crowd was excellent for such a small location in Grantski Records. From what I’ve seen in other local shows from other states, the crowd just feels dead o

Metal is in a Great Spot Right Now

Even though metal may never be genuinely mainstream again as it was in the early 2000s, the mainstream alternative is an amazing place to be in 2023.

So many fantastic bands in the scene are absolutely killing it. Face Yourself, Slaughter to Prevail and Spiritbox are just some of my favorites. Even in the traditional death metal scene, bands like Crypta are dropping top-tier singles that display some of the best death metal I have heard in a few years.

Having some of the biggest mainstream artists in the world like Demi Levato and Lil Uzi Vert promote this music is so telling as it showcases a shift in the culture that is very exciting and promising for the future.

Hell, even nu-metal is having one of the most unexpected resurgences as more and more people are listening to it by the day, including me. I love those classic bands and their music.

Being a mainstream alternative is what most metalheads should expect and that’s not a bad thing, it’s a great thing.

Trees of Eternity – Hour of the Nightingale (Album Review)

The only thing worse than losing a fantastic artist is losing the art that accompanied their life.

For the one and only Trees of Eternity project we will ever receive, there is a bittersweet feeling that comes from knowing the art is not lost.

“Hour of the Nightingale”, released in November 2016, is a perfect encapsulation of sadness, grief, remorse, and loss that a person could experience all at once.

Certainly, Aleah Stanbridge, the posthumous vocalist of this project, knew this wholeheartedly.

Being diagnosed with cancer has to give one a completely different outlook on life. It seems that Aleah reveled in this with the music that she made despite the outcome that was inevitable.

Nita Strauss – The Call of the Void (Album Review)

Nita Strauss, one of the most badass guitarists in the world today, comes in with an even grander spectacle for her second full-length solo LP. Or perhaps, it isn’t that solo.

Now, with a full lineup of some of the biggest names in rock and metal by her side, she has opened up the floodgates to a broader audience, even though she has been making waves for years already.

It is a departure from her debut, “Controlled Chaos”, where she captured all of the magic by herself.

Strauss still shines on “Call of the Void” with multiple instrumental-only tracks as one would expect from her. This includes “Summer Storm”, “Consume the Fire”, “

Lil Uzi Vert’s Chop Suey Cover is Bad, But That Shouldn’t Matter

I speak for a majority of people when I say that Lil Uzi Vert’s track ‘CS’ from his recently released album ‘Pink Tape’ is an objectively bad song. Just look at the last minute and a half. It completely butchers the most memorable moments that made Chop Suey such a legendary metal song.
While I can say this without any hesitation, it honestly should not matter. Lil Uzi Vert’s interpretation needs to be viewed differently. It should be seen as another perfect example of crossover culture in the world of metal, rock, and rap music.
